800 GUESTS BRAVE THE COLD FOR THE ANNUAL
FESTIVAL OF CHRISTMAS
The Keene Entertainment Center hosted the annual BGFC Festival of Christmas for industry workers on a cold, snowy night Wednesday, December 17. The threat of a major snow and ice storm didn't dampen the spirit or the attendance.
"This is by far the biggest crowd we have ever had," states president and chief executive, Mary Lee-Butte. "I can honestly say that every family who came through the door seemed to have a genuine need. Times are hard."
Among the farm and track workers, there were a number of folks who are disabled because of illness or injury and being helped by the charity who brought their families for a nice meal and gifts.
Turf Catering served a traditional holiday spread of turkey and all the trimmings along with beautiful desserts and decorated cookies for the kids. Live music and a puppet show conducted by Versailles Baptist Church delighted the children until Santa and one of his elves arrived.
More than 2500 pieces of new and gently used clothing items were free for the taking. Along with an age and gender appropriate gift, each child received a new hat and gloves. Keeneland Gift Shop provided each adult guest with a new sweatshirt or fleece hoodie of their choice.
Thank you to the dozens of volunteers who helped before, during and after the event. And, also to Sallee Horse Vans for transporting all of the items to Keeneland. We appreciate everyone's donation of toys, food, cash, and gift cards.
